Alternatives to IndiaMART for finding manufacturers
Kavita Tewari
The direct alternatives are TradeIndia, ExportersIndia, Global Sources and Alibaba. All of them run the same model IndiaMART runs, so switching gets you a different list rather than a better one. The channels that actually work differently are export promotion council directories, trade fairs and referrals.
One disclosure before the list. Reborn Goods does vetted matchmaking, which is one of the alternatives covered here. It appears with the others and with its limitations stated.
The direct swaps
If you want another directory, these are the real ones.
Platform | What it is | Honest note |
|---|---|---|
TradeIndia | The closest like-for-like. Operating since 1996, around 5 million suppliers | Same model, smaller than IndiaMART. Strongest in domestic trade |
ExportersIndia | Established 1997, Delhi-based, over 600,000 enquiries a month | Export-oriented, which matters if you are buying from outside India |
Global Sources | International B2B marketplace | China-weighted. Thinner on Indian suppliers |
Alibaba | Around 300,000 Indian storefronts | Has Trade Assurance, which no Indian directory offers. Indian depth is thin |
JustDial, Sulekha | Local services listings | Not manufacturer directories. Largely the wrong tool |
Udaan, Infra.Market | Vertical B2B platforms | Category-specific, transactional rather than discovery |
Reborn Goods | Vetted matchmaking, not a directory. | The only option here where someone checked first. Also the smallest network by a distance, so some categories we cannot cover at all |
If you only wanted that list, you have it. The rest of this page is about why the swap usually disappoints.
The problem is the model, not the platform
IndiaMART is not badly run. It is a directory, and directories share four properties that no competitor removes by existing:
Anyone can list. Nothing is verified in the sense a buyer means.
Listings are self-written. The claims are marketing copy.
Prominence is paid. What you see first reflects spend, not quality.
Leads are shared. Your enquiry goes to several suppliers at once, which turns the response into a price race.
Move to TradeIndia and all four still apply, with fewer suppliers.
The fourth point is the one that matters most, and a manufacturer explained it to us directly. One apparel manufacturer we interviewed is on none of these platforms and will not buy leads, calling them shared leads that never convert because their pricing sits above market.
Read that carefully. The directory model selects for price competition. Manufacturers who compete on quality rather than price frequently opt out entirely, which means the suppliers you most want are systematically the ones least likely to be there.
Absence from a directory is not evidence of anything. Presence is not evidence of much either.
What actually works differently
Export promotion council directories
The strongest option almost nobody mentions, and it is free.
India has more than 30 export promotion organisations, each established by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, each covering a category, and each maintaining a member directory.
The ones most relevant to consumer brands:
Council | Covers |
|---|---|
Apparel and ready-made garments | |
Cosmetics, toiletries, chemicals, dyes, essential oils | |
Handicrafts and home | |
APEDA | Agricultural and processed food products |
EEPC | Engineering goods |
Why these beat a marketplace:
Membership means something. These are registered exporters, not anyone with an email address.
Export-oriented by definition. If you are buying from outside India, everyone listed already exports.
Category-organised, so you are not filtering ten thousand irrelevant results.
No paid prominence, and no shared-lead auction.
Free.
The trade-off: the directories are less polished, the search is worse, and you will do more work per lead. You are trading convenience for a better starting population, which is usually the right trade.
Trade fairs
Councils also organise and subsidise participation in trade fairs, domestically and abroad, which is why their event calendars are a useful discovery tool in their own right.
Meeting a manufacturer in person, seeing samples in your hand, and having a twenty-minute conversation tells you more than three weeks of directory messaging. For anyone serious about a category, one show is worth more than any amount of browsing.
Check the relevant council's event listings for what is coming up in your sector.
Referrals
Underrated and free. Other founders in your category already know who is good and who wasted six weeks of their time. A single honest referral from someone who has shipped beats any listing.
The obstacle is that founders treat their manufacturer as competitive information. Some do. Many will tell you if asked directly.
Vetted matchmaking
Services that interview and verify manufacturers, then introduce you. This is what we do, so weigh it accordingly.
What it gives you: verification already done, and a record of what was checked and what was not.
What it does not: breadth. Our network is small by design, which means some categories we cannot serve at all. A directory with five million listings covers ground we do not. When we cannot help we say so, but the limitation is real and it is the main one.
What to use when
Situation | Best channel |
|---|---|
Understanding price ranges in a category | Marketplace. Free, fast, good enough for this |
Building a first shortlist | Export promotion council directory |
Buying from outside India | ExportersIndia or a council directory. Both are export-oriented |
You want payment protection on a first order | Alibaba, for Trade Assurance |
Serious about a category long term | Trade fair |
You know other founders in the space | Referrals, before anything else |
You want the verification done for you | Vetted matchmaking |
The sequence that works: marketplace for price discovery, council directory or referral for the shortlist, then verify properly, then commission an inspection on the finalist.
No single channel does all four. The mistake is expecting one to.
Whatever you use, verify independently
Every channel on this page, ours included, gives you candidates rather than certainty.
Check the CIN, GSTIN and IEC, and confirm the registered name matches the company you are talking to
Verify certificate numbers in the issuing body's own database, never from a PDF
Confirm the name on the invoice, the bank account, the GSTIN and the licence all match exactly
Commission your own inspection on the finalist, around $220 plus travel for a basic verification
A directory listing, a council membership and a matchmaking introduction are all starting points. None of them is a substitute for checking.
Or let us do it
If your category is one we do not cover, we will tell you and point you at the right council instead.

FAQ
What are the best alternatives to IndiaMART?
TradeIndia is the closest like-for-like, operating since 1996 with around 5 million suppliers. ExportersIndia is more export-oriented. Alibaba has roughly 300,000 Indian storefronts plus Trade Assurance payment protection. But all of these run the same directory model, so switching gets you a different list rather than a better one.
Is IndiaMART reliable for finding manufacturers?
It is useful for price discovery and building an initial shortlist, and it verifies nothing in the sense a buyer means. Anyone can list, listings are self-written, prominence is paid, and enquiries are shared across multiple suppliers, which turns responses into a price race. Treat it as a starting point rather than a filter.
How do I find Indian manufacturers without using a marketplace?
Export promotion council directories are the strongest free option. India has more than 30 councils established by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, each covering a category and maintaining a member directory of registered exporters. AEPC covers apparel, CHEMEXCIL covers cosmetics and chemicals, EPCH covers handicrafts. Trade fairs and founder referrals also work well.
Why are good manufacturers not on IndiaMART?
Because the directory model selects for price competition. One apparel manufacturer we interviewed is on none of the major platforms and will not buy leads, since shared leads never convert for a supplier whose pricing sits above market. Manufacturers competing on quality rather than price frequently opt out, so absence from a directory is not evidence of anything.
Are export promotion council directories free?
Yes. The councils are government-established bodies and their member directories are publicly accessible. The trade-off is that the sites are less polished and the search functionality is weaker than a commercial marketplace, so you do more work per lead against a better starting population.
What is the best way to find a manufacturer in India overall?
No single channel does everything. Use a marketplace for price discovery, a council directory or a founder referral to build the shortlist, verify registrations and certificates independently, then commission your own inspection on the finalist. The mistake is expecting one channel to handle all four jobs.
